You should have thought long and hard about the consequences of ticking off computer nerds with your anticlimactic endings, David Chase. They'll mess up your Wikipedia bio. Talk about someone who could use witness protection – you know, in case the crazies take it a few steps further.
This morning we asked how ticked off you all were about "The Sopranos" finale on a scale of one to 10, with one meaning you may have already started writing a dissertation on the brilliance of David Chase, and 10 meaning you launched your flat screen through the living room window. Or at least you thought about it.
Based on the votes that have come in so far, the Sopranos rage-o-meter is currently at 6.1.
But it's not too late to add your two cents. The survey is here.
Hulk smash!!! Hulk mad!!! Hulk not like lack of resolution in "Sopranos" finale!!! Hulk no like how David Chase toy with his emotions then cop out with whimpy, open-ended ending!!! RRAAAAARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!
That's how I feel. Granted, the final scene -- with the screen going blank and surely making 20 to 40 million freak out at the same time -- was a brilliant if mean spirited practical joke. Wonder how many people bashed their TV screens in with baseball bats in fits of "Untouchables"-style rage? And just how ticked off were you all? Or did you actually like the ending? Take the survey.
I could go for one more season.
Gotta give a nod to reporter Sean Robinson, or "Nostra-Sean-mus," as we'll be calling him starting Monday. Here's what he said a while back:
"As for who whacks Tony, my prediction is nobody. Nor will he go to jail. I think he knocks off Phil, however. I suspect the season ends in a sort of stasis, with everything in uneasy balance. This entire season has focused on aging, on rites of passage, on coping with the loss of vitality, on recognizing the presence of legacy in one form or another. Latest episode showed Tony seeing his own craziness passed on to his son. First episode of the year included the lovely moment between Janice and Carmela on the shoreline, where Janice chatters and you slowly realize she’s a complete psycho.
Throughout the series, we’ve always watched Tony struggle between his selfish impulses and the knowledge of what has to be done (through his warped perspective). Invariably, he does what has to be done – sometimes he’s clumsy about it, but he always does it. It’s his ability to rise above impulse that keeps him alive and makes him formidable. I predict that quality will save him in the end."
And, for a minute there at the end of the episode, I really thought Meadow was gonna buy it, just like Gandalf said. Well, either her or the three members of the family already inside the restaurant.
I could have done with out the reappearance of Hunter Skank-a-rella, or whatever David Chase's daughter's character's name is. I always hated her character, and her reappearance was unnecessary and corny.
I think Chase was just playing with us during the entire episode, ratcheting up the tension with every other scene: AJ's SUV smoking, wise guys meeting in a freezing warehouse, suspicious cars pulling up to Tony, lots of conjecture about who really flipped, gun charges that won't go away, people bursting into safehouses – even at the very end you had several characters looking as though they might be hanging around the restaurant just clip Tony.
So what did you all think? Are you satisfied? Hungry for more? Sick of Philly's squashed melon? Sick of Journey? I gotta digest it some more, but how do you digest "stasis" and "uneasy balance"?
My "Sopranos" watching buddy and I are having a big spaghetti dinner. There was talk of cigars and suits. No big whoop. But anyone else doing anything fun to commemorate the finale?
Not much has changed with our "Who's Gonna Whack Tony?" survey with only a few more ballots coming in. And one of the contenders is dead as of last episode. But here's how you thought the finale would go down:
Tony will live and possibly go to jail or flip: 40 percent
Carmela or Phil Leotardo: 13 percent each
Several people will team up to take Tony down: 10 percent
Paulie: 8 percent
Meadow or Janice: 5 percent each
AJ, Artie, Furio, Dr. Elliot, Patsy, Bobby Bacala or Tony in a suicidal moment: 3 percent
At this point, I guess it's safe to say the Bobby Bacala votes were wrong. Now if this was more of a "Cleaver" style gangster drama, that would be a different story.
Obviously, several candidates have been eliminated since we first opened our "Who's Gonna Whack Tony Soprano?" survey. But just for fun, we thought we'd solicit one last round of votes for Sunday's finale.
Vote here and we'll post final results between now and Sunday.
