TALL SHIPS TACOMA 2008 DVD ON SALE - "Wind in the Rigging", the official Tall Ships Tacoma 2008 video is available for preview/purchase online at www.northwoodsproductions.com/tallships This engaging 35 minute feature of the festival was produced by the Tall Ships Tacoma video team and North Woods Productions of Gig Harbor, which specializes in travel, recreation and corporate video production.

The video had it's premier showing at the Galaxy Theater in Gig Harbor in April of 2009, and was enthusiastically received. A portion of each video sale is donated to the Tall Ships Tacoma Organization. It makes an excellent gift for all lovers of our maritime heritage.

Dear Tacoma News Tribune:

My wife and I enjoy touring ship; in New York, fleet week is a special and enjoyable. However, the Tall Ships week seemed to be poorly operated and managed. Many persons we observed, ourselves included, had tickets to board ships that were not there. And if they were there, no one could tour because of what appeared to be missed communication with the ticketing agents. We were surprised that this was the outcome, however, it seems that with the deficit incurred by Tall Ships, this is not surprising since the whole operation was very poorly managed. We can only hope that it will be managed fairly next time so that those who paid good money with the expectation of touring specific ships they had paid to see will be able to be fairly treated.
how is it that 700,000 people attend the festival of sail in tacoma, while in san francisco just 3 weeks later, only 5 thousand or so attend the SAME event?

i am an artist who was sold a vending spot in the Green Village.

can anyone explain? did any attend both events?

wow, congressmen were enlisted to bring the eagle to the event.

i wanted to comment on the earlier story about 700,000 person attendance.

i just participated as a vendor in the Green Village in San Francisco's Festival of Sail, and the attendance was utterly dismal.

we were told to expect one million visitors, and a liberal guess of visitors to our area, including the Eagle and Bounty were maybe 3-5 thousand tops over 3 days.

how can tacoma draw over half a million visitors and san francisco can't get into the tens of thousands?

great coverage by this paper for one.

look for coverage in the bay area from Festival Media partners the SF Bay Guardian and the Examiner.

there was hardly any coverage of the event.

well done, Tacoma!

My husband Lane and I were very fortunate to be guests aboard the security boat assigned to the Lynx on the 4th of July. Our skipper, Mike, got us right up into the battle! Those ships do get really close to each other! We could smell the gunpowder, and, because of Mike's considerable skill, we were able to weave in and out between and big ships while keeping other small craft away from danger. It was really a thrill of a lifetime, and just happened to be a great 49th birthday present for Lane, too (yes, on the 4th!). Because it was the last trip of the day, we also got to watch the fireworks from Mike's sailboat, and then escorted the Lynx back to her dock. I never knew Mike's last name, but I will be eternally grateful to him for his generosity, and the memories Lane and I will have forever.

If anyone has photos of this once in a lifetime event they wish to share showing the Army Tug and Eagle I would appreciate recieving them. It was a significant event but I was much to busy to take photos or even enjoy the the moment

Departure time is up to the individual ships - in other words, there's no reverse Parade of Sail - but most are leaving between 6 and 8 a.m. Scott Fontaine will have more details up on the blog in a few minutes.

Folks who want to see more of these doughty soldiers can catch them in the Military Camp at the Washington Renaissance Fantasy Faire, the first three weekends of August, in Belfair, WA. They will be doing sword-fighting demos, pike drills, and general soldiery things (like guarding the Queen on her "progress"). www.washingtonrenfaire.com

I went with my family and some friends to the festival yesterday at 11:00 AM. We were very disappointed that the wait to tour the largest vessels was close to two hours. About 45 minutes is my limit for standing in line, especially with children. Purchasing the premium event pass turned out to be a waste of money since we opted not to stand in line that long. If there were near real time monitors at the ticket booths that provided this type of information, it would help people make better choices regarding which event pass would serve their needs. A low tech solution for providing this information, such as radios and white boards would suffice. Other than that, we enjoyed the event as it is always good to see so many large sailing vessels in one port. I could have purchased two more pirate swords with the money saved buying the basic event pass.

Thursday was the only day my family was able to attend. Unfortunately you can’t board the ships on the first day due to the crews still getting them ready for the festival. It took us about 30 minutes to find this out since none of the ticket windows were open. My only complaint was there were no signs giving fair warning that Dock Street was closed at Schuster making us spend an extra 20 minutes in traffic with a cranky 10 month old. Now that we’re more familiar with the festival we look forward to next year so we can enjoy all that it has to offer.
