Good eats and drinks around Tacoma, Pierce County and South Puget Sound

Woody's Wharf has a new chef, a new general manager, a new menu and a new last name.

The restaurant, which opened in August, celebrates its grand opening Thursday, with free appetizers and $1 drinks from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Chris Bangert, previously of The Cliff House, is the new chef. Thomas Johnson, formerly of Sea Grill, now runs the front.

Johnson told me today that Woody's has new last name –- on the Water.

Woody's on the Water, Johnson said, better fits Woody's upscale, loungey decor, a hold-over from the days when the restaurant and bar was Blue Olive, the ill-fated "ultra lounge" and martini bar. (The Woody part derives from owner Coy Wood's name.)

Along with the more upscale-sounding name comes a new menu that resembles other Tacoma waterfront restaurants, from The Cliff House to C.I. Shenanigans: Alaskan salmon and halibut, Hawaiian ono, panko-crusted fish and chips, prime rib, steaks, chops, shellfish and more.

Woody's on the Water (nee Woody's Wharf): 1517 Dock St., Tacoma; 253-272-1433. Lunch and dinner daily from 11 a.m.

The owner needs to get a clue and drop the Woody!

I like it.

The name is bad. That said, the menu doesn't set them apart from anyone else. What gives? Perhaps the out-of-state owner is so absent from the restaurant that he/she is content with just stealing some wavering business from the other waterfront joints. Sad.

Woody's on the Water is even WORSE! Not a name I would associate with an "upscale, loungey place". Hey honey, let's go to Woody's on the Water. I don't think so.

I would like to welcome Tacoma and surrounding areas to come down and try our new menu. Coy Wood (Woody) and I are excited to have a new concept and menu that is being executed by executive chef Chris Bangert. Our menu is northwest inspired cuisine offering fresh seafood, steaks, and local favorites. The view from our dining room is of the marina and we are located on the esplanade of the Thea Foss Waterway. We are an upscale dining establishment that provides top value and service. We have happy hour everyday from 2pm-6pm and I would like you to come down and give us the opportunity to get to know you.

Thomas:

Thanks for the invitation.

My wife and I will come in sometime soon to check it out!

I don't "fit" my name either...give the place a chance beyond the moniker.

We went to the opening and met Woody, he's a real guy and I think some people owe him an apology! He can't help his nickname! He was as charming as Thomas. Thanks for the invite. The old school menu is welcome after all the new-age recipes out there. We'll see you Saturday for the pecan crusted fried oysters. YUM. Good luck you guys.

Chef Bangert.... sounds familiar. Where was he at before Woody's?

I went there tonight.

I think they need another review. They are pretty good now. Thomas has brought their game up a couple notches.
