Good eats and drinks around Tacoma, Pierce County and South Puget Sound

The former St. Helens Cafe will become ... St. Harmon's? St. Helens Speakeasy?

Pat Nagle said he doesn't know. Nagle, the restaurant-and-real-estate guy who owns the Harmon brewpub on Tacoma's Pacific Avenue, is the guy who's bailing out St. Helens Cafe and building out a "neighborhood restaurant" in the 6,000-square-foot former fish-and-chippery above Doyle's Public House and Stadium Bistro.

From Nagle, we know this much:

Nagle likes Tom Douglas' seriously good pizza at Serious Pie. He'll install a fiery pizza oven.

He wants to do breakfast.

He wants to do sit-down dining.

He foresees doing delivery in the neighborhood. He wants to do take-out, too.

He wants to "warm up" the cavernous space.

He said he'll install flat-panel TVs.

He said it won't be a sports bar.

He said there'll be a bike rack out front.

He wants to expand the bar and do 25-30 percent beer-and-liquor business.

Harmon brewmaster Mike Davis' beers will be served at the new place.

Nagle said he doesn't have a name in mind.

That's where you come in:

Name Nagle's New Neighborhood Restaurant

Pizza and Breakfast in the St. Helens neighborhood? Very solid idea. With an original and dynamic concept like that, here's just a couple quick names for consideration:

1. Cutting Edgers
2. Brew-Tays

History can help name a place sometimes:

-TDL 1/2/1891 p.5 Opening of the Montello Hotel
-TDL 6/21/1899 p.1 Montello is in ruins (fire)
-bldg. originally occupied 202-08 Saint Helens Ave., section of bldg. at 202 Saint Helens Ave. rebuilt/remodeled after a fire in 1899
-Man locks tavern, then backs pickup into
it (Lonesome Tavern)

American Automobile Co. / Wing Bros.

Everyone always talks about how the neighborhood, and Tacoma itself, is on the cusp of becoming something else, so what about "The Verge," or "On The Verge"? Maybe "On the Edge." Something like that...

I think Tacoma should be happy about what we've already done so far. It's not that long ago that more than half of downtown was boarded-up and uninhabitable. There are some great things happening in our town.
brianstrandberg @ 14:19 - Friday, February 1st, 2008 Email
I think the obvious is STADIUM GRILL its short, easy to remember and describes the area it's in.

The French have a great tradition of using gross names for good places - i.e. Deux Maggots.

In that vein, how about The Chum Bucket?

RE: Parking. Do subsidized valet like PG does. 1st Presbyterian is close by and they have surface lots that are virtually abandoned. A parking company could contract to use those spaces - 1st Presby makes some money, restaurant patrons get their parking.

How about something simple like Cafe Tacoma? It reminds me of the name Cafe WA, which I always liked. Whatever happened to that place? Anyway, it also makes sense because the space fronts Tacoma Ave, and it sounds like a really local joint. You could also go with Locals' (as in, belonging to the locals, not as in low calorie), but that reminds me of a brand of clothing.
tbaier @ 15:47 - Friday, February 1st, 2008 Email
I really like Jacob's idea about using the Montello connection. Montello Grill.

I also like kpotis suggestion about "Nagle's". It's a fun word to say, and Pat deserves it after reviving The Harmon. Squid's idea about "Chum Bucket" is good, too.

How about

Commencement Bay Cafe (CBC is easy to say)
Columbia Grill (tie in to the old Columbia Brewery)
The Wright Stuff
Grit City Grill (or Pizza or Public House)
Destiny Grill (or Pizza)
Tacomapolitan (aka neopolitan pizza)

It will be wonderful to have another place to quaff Harmon brews. Salut!

What's up with all the school spirit-ish names suggested! Are we so freakishly pro-Tacoman that any new dining destination should named after this red headed step child of a city that we live in. Come'on, can you imagine every new bistro/restaurant/cafe in seattle being called the emerald grill..or Seattle City Pizza...or..Oh Nevermind!

Good luck Pat. We look forward to it. Stadium is the most improved business district in the city. People cannot get enough of Doyles.

RE: Parking. Do subsidized valet like PG does. 1st Presbyterian is close by and they have surface lots that are virtually abandoned. A parking company could contract to use those spaces - 1st Presby makes some money, restaurant patrons get their parking.

Good idea. Perhaps simply convince the city to put in 2 hour parking signs in the area. There is a tone of street parking which is underutilized.

harmonbrew @ 10:07 - Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 Email
All fabulous ideas; love the historical info from Jacob - State and City history is a passion of mine. Montello Hotel, i think that name might have something!! I think we will pass on Chumbucket; Chester was my dog growing up so that tugged at me; As much as i love T-Town, i agree with Eli. My busines partner, Carole Holder, will bring amazing style and taste to the menu - especially the breakfast. We are doing everything we can to get the pizza oven in the space(all 4700 lbs of it) and we are confident we can do some special things with it so that we can offer a unique menu mix - it will have an Italian/Mediterranean flavor to it, while still branding the Harmon brewpub/family gathering/neighborhood thing. I like neighborhood in the name - Harmon's Montello Pizzeria, hmmm. OK - with everyone's input, and of course all of my 4 siblings throwing names at us left and right, it's getting a little crazy. Keep the input coming, thanks for the interest and ideas and look for a decision on the name sometime early next week - we gotta keep moving if we want to be open for St Paddy's Day! Ciao
chornelium @ 12:29 - Saturday, February 2nd, 2008
With the walking (local neighborhood)/biking theme for the restaurant.. along with the Italian/Med flavor..

Vista Maratona - View of the marathon: appropriate because of the restaurant's outward looking visibility and accommodation to those who choose to visit by either walking or bike. It's got a nice ring to it, simple, and effective.

Stadium Station - for something a little less foreign, and concise, as it'll be the destination for many in the near future, no doubt.

HARMON ON THE HILL

Have an erruption of flavors at The St Helens
(no cafe or restuarant after the name. Just The St Helens)
bnbjohnson @ 17:51 - Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 Email
Here's my thinking on "Harmon on the Hill." You already have great name recognition around here, so don't lose the Harmon. You just have to distinguish it from the one downtown. People are probably going to call it something like that whichever name you choose anyway. Another option: Harmon Uptown
(Future conversation):
"Meet me at the Harmon!" "Downtown or Uptown?" "Let's go Uptown."
Pat, is there free beer involved if you use one of these names?
JakeR @ 18:36 - Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 Email
http://www.TacomaUntapped.com/
But "Harmon Uptown" is still in Downtown and "Downtown" Harmon is also in Downtown but in Museum District/UWT neighborhood of Downtown.

Now if the St. Helens neighborhood was called Uptown that might work. I think with the Upper Tacoma Biz District being there I would try to stay away from the term Uptown. Might confuse people.

I was thinking literally with the up and down thing, but Jacob's right that it could be confusing with the Upper Tacoma BD. I guess "on the hill" could be confused with the Hilltop BD. What about "The Harmon - St. Helens". It sounds simple, but right away people will know what they're getting and where to find it.

the HARMON on HELEN'S

-(little "the" & "on". big "HARMON" & "HELEN'S")
-like bnbj said: it tells you what your're getting and where to get it.
-harmon brand is important to promotion of the beer.
-reaffirms a location, that currently isn't much of a destination point or high traffic area.
-keeps the harmon brand, but still allows it to have it's own identity/concept.
-First Pres parking lot is a GREAT idea.

-and, admit it, it's just fun to say!

Being one of Pat's 4 siblings with numerous suggestions, my favorite of course is "Chester's". (thank you Barbie, for keeping your glass raised to the one and only...) Pat, she WAS referring to our dog. I do like St. Helen's in the name and imagine a wall-sized photograph of the mountain erupting (Pat, please bring back the wall mural era of the 70's) My other favorite is "The Montello". I love that word. I think you've proven that you want to keep Tacoma's rich history alive. I think people will learn that the Harmon is involved. How about "St. Helen's Harmon"
(a neighborhood pub and pizzeria)
That's all I've got. Keep it coming people. Nice work.

Squid @ 09:22 - Monday, February 4th, 2008 Email
OK, so Chum Bucket didn't fly. Here are a couple of ideas.

The place is one block from Wright Park, one of our 2 jewel parks. You could go on a variation of Wright, of of which benefit from the homonym-ization: Wright Grill, Wright Cafe, even just Wright's. Or if you want to be a little cutesy, Wright Stuff (this would conjure visions of on of my favorite breakfast joints, Good Stuff on Hermosa Beach). In that vein, you could also go with honoring Frederick Olmstead, who designed both Wright Park and NYC's Central Park. Olmstead Bar and Grill? Frederick's (of Tacoma)? (it could be decorated with a variety of knickers - or not).

The other idea is to play off the outdoorsy vibe. Me, I love rivers and like Norman Maclean am haunted by waters. We are blessed in this region with really cool river names. Among the possibilities are Nisqually, Deschutes (prolly taken), Nooksack (meetcha at the Nook), Stillaguamish (Stilly's), Skagit, Skykomish, Skookumchuck (da Skook), Wynoochee (the Nooch). Humptulips anyone?

Just back from a little R&R...

I would go with something super-simple since the Harmon name and branding is already so well-established:

"Harmon Too" (II or 2)

Just my *too cents* (I know, groan)

goddesslunacy @ 02:35 - Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 Email
Ugh, can we drop the Harmon bit? Since the space is being recreated, how bout The Phoenix Grill/Cafe? In regards to St Helens, "The Lava Lounge", "The Volcano". Italian/mediterranean? "Tacoma Roma" "Tacoma Tomato" Ok now I'm getting silly, I'll stop.
goddesslunacy @ 03:06 - Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 Email
"Tacoma Roma"
Hahaha, I think that's my favorite idea.
"Phoenix Cafe" is my second.

Just don't make it look like Farrelli's.

And the wall mural would be a fantastic idea.

A pool table would be nice if you want people to hang out for a drink in the later hours.

It would be great if breakfast was available all day. I don't get up early so I know I would truly enjoy that.

Either way, look forward to checking out the newly revamped space.

Personally, I think you can keep the Harmon branding on the beer without using it in the name. Since Pat is already serious about re-creating some Serious Pie, look at Tom Douglas. My bet is that 75% of his patrons know they are going into a TD restaurant and are going their in large part because of the credibility of the brand. Yet he has Dahlia Lounge, Palace Kitchen, Ettas, Lola, Serious Pie ... He didn't go with try to replicate the brand by calling Etta's "Dahlia at the Market".

I say have some fun with it Pat, and brand the beer on the inside. We'll all know the connection, and we'll want to go to the Stadium/St. Helens location for how it is DIFFERENT from the Harmon (except for the beer part, we want that just the same).

Wow.... what a buzz this has created 54 posts plus....It's fun to see the future of our home town but, it is the time to go support our local ones that stillexist and are here now. It has been a rough new yr for a lot of our local dining holes. i.e. taxes, food cost and the overall ecomomy. This has put a big hit on family owned restaurants. I have counted 6 in the last few weeks that have had to lock the doors in Pierce County due to circumstances***.The Big Boys ( OG, RL, and Applecrap) can survive these times based on "specials and giant backsided money ( shareholders)" but our family local accounts weigh on local support.I am sure most of us that read, reply and respond to this blog don't dine at the above mentioned accounts.Therfore, please bring your comments forward on the places you like to dine now and spread the word, brag about service, talk about food and overall tell us about the experience.... we all depend on this.I could name places to go but it would be endless. Look down 6th Ave, Stadium area, Proctor,Pacific Ave, Eastside...endless. Your neighbor probably owns one of these places. Promote Tacoma and Dining out in the Northwest.

Yes, unbelievable response to naming Harmon Brewery's 2nd location. We had hoped to have a name by now - I think i even mentioned last Wednesday as a target date for that. You can imagine with all of this response and those within my family and friends - we are overwhelmend (in a good way).
I believ we are close to making a decision, but we have asked for some professional assistance so that we can have them also help with logo design. The one think we have decided is that we are going with a cycling theme - Old school cycling - Italian, neighborhood, gathering -the new pizza oven will be the centerpiece of the kitchen and we will provide unique artisan pizza pie, fresh non-traditional toppings, awesome pastas, salads and sandwiches; some family style dishes, all with local, fresh ingredients. Of course, locally brewed beer, a killer wine list and a full bar.
Easy "to-go" pick up which may lead to delivery.

We are working with the city, local residents and neighborhood districts to build out some additional green space out front for more outside seating and parking!! We appreciate all the comments - amazing stuff! Still pushing to open before St Paddy's Day.
Cheers!

I think "Nagels Hideaway" would be fitting considering that the location is kind of hidden. It would also have a double meaning, hideaway being a place to which a person can retreat for safety or relaxation... Can't go wrong.

Hey french guy - It's obvious you have a bone of contention with The Harmon and our ability to provide you and your friend Leper with a quality product. I can assure you that I am the first one to admit that we can always do things better at the Harmon. However, I challenge you to go there right now, buy a burger, fish and chips or one of our sandwiches - order a cold pint of ale brewed 15 feet from where you are sitting - and tell me we don't get it right. Our service is awesome and we don't slack when hiring quality people. We buy only the best products and freshest ingredients from our purveyors and we buy locally as much as possible. We strive, not only to exceed our guests expectations, but to bring something back to the community through our involvement with many non profit organizations that make a community strong. This year, The Harmon Bike Club has a goal of raising $50,000 for Mary Bridge Childrens Hospital and the Child Abuse Prevention Center. Maybe I am overthinking the theme with cycling, but I can tell you that I couldn't be more excited for this "soon to be neighborhood, cycling/pedestrian pizza, pasta and brewpub establishment". We are working hard to to the local residents and business folks something unique, fun and really good food. We will put quality people to work, buy local and fresh, raise some money for a few kids that need our help...and feel good about it. I hope that you and Leper join our bike club and get on board. We always welcome input and beleive me, we WILL be worrying about making good food this time!

I am fully psyched for this place - I live near, in the neighborhood off the park, so it will be a nice short walk for me. Pizza & local brew within a half-mile of my front door? Sold. I'll be a regular this summer!

My two cents on the branding: if I were associated with the Harmon I would shamelessly tout the relationship with the new digs. From the couple of years I've been a Tacoman, I gather that the Harmon has an overwhelmingly positive identity with locals, and that identity might draw customers who are unaware of who Pat is and his involvement in the new place (if only we all read Ed's Diner!)
