The former St. Helens Cafe will become ... St. Harmon's? St. Helens Speakeasy?
Pat Nagle said he doesn't know. Nagle, the restaurant-and-real-estate guy who owns the Harmon brewpub on Tacoma's Pacific Avenue, is the guy who's bailing out St. Helens Cafe and building out a "neighborhood restaurant" in the 6,000-square-foot former fish-and-chippery above Doyle's Public House and Stadium Bistro.
From Nagle, we know this much:
Nagle likes Tom Douglas' seriously good pizza at Serious Pie. He'll install a fiery pizza oven.
He wants to do breakfast.
He wants to do sit-down dining.
He foresees doing delivery in the neighborhood. He wants to do take-out, too.
He wants to "warm up" the cavernous space.
He said he'll install flat-panel TVs.
He said it won't be a sports bar.
He said there'll be a bike rack out front.
He wants to expand the bar and do 25-30 percent beer-and-liquor business.
Harmon brewmaster Mike Davis' beers will be served at the new place.
Nagle said he doesn't have a name in mind.

I think Tacoma should be happy about what we've already done so far. It's not that long ago that more than half of downtown was boarded-up and uninhabitable. There are some great things happening in our town.
I also like kpotis suggestion about "Nagle's". It's a fun word to say, and Pat deserves it after reviving The Harmon. Squid's idea about "Chum Bucket" is good, too.
How about
Commencement Bay Cafe (CBC is easy to say)
Columbia Grill (tie in to the old Columbia Brewery)
The Wright Stuff
Grit City Grill (or Pizza or Public House)
Destiny Grill (or Pizza)
Tacomapolitan (aka neopolitan pizza)
It will be wonderful to have another place to quaff Harmon brews. Salut!
RE: Parking. Do subsidized valet like PG does. 1st Presbyterian is close by and they have surface lots that are virtually abandoned. A parking company could contract to use those spaces - 1st Presby makes some money, restaurant patrons get their parking.
Good idea. Perhaps simply convince the city to put in 2 hour parking signs in the area. There is a tone of street parking which is underutilized.
Vista Maratona - View of the marathon: appropriate because of the restaurant's outward looking visibility and accommodation to those who choose to visit by either walking or bike. It's got a nice ring to it, simple, and effective.
Stadium Station - for something a little less foreign, and concise, as it'll be the destination for many in the near future, no doubt.

(Future conversation):
"Meet me at the Harmon!" "Downtown or Uptown?" "Let's go Uptown."
Pat, is there free beer involved if you use one of these names?
Now if the St. Helens neighborhood was called Uptown that might work. I think with the Upper Tacoma Biz District being there I would try to stay away from the term Uptown. Might confuse people.
Yes. Get her to cook the apple dumplings again and I promise to buy 2 a week for a year.
I agree the space needs to be warmed up a bit. i was in the St. Helen's Cafe and it was open and very cold feeling. The layout was goofy, I thought.
GritCity Pizza
Keeping in mind that Pat likes the word "neighborhood" and taking into consideration Ed's alliterative "Name Nagle's New Neighborhood Restaurant" my modest suggestion is:
Nagle's Neighborhood Nosherie.
Ta da!
-(little "the" & "on". big "HARMON" & "HELEN'S")
-like bnbj said: it tells you what your're getting and where to get it.
-harmon brand is important to promotion of the beer.
-reaffirms a location, that currently isn't much of a destination point or high traffic area.
-keeps the harmon brand, but still allows it to have it's own identity/concept.
-First Pres parking lot is a GREAT idea.
-and, admit it, it's just fun to say!
(a neighborhood pub and pizzeria)
That's all I've got. Keep it coming people. Nice work.
The place is one block from Wright Park, one of our 2 jewel parks. You could go on a variation of Wright, of of which benefit from the homonym-ization: Wright Grill, Wright Cafe, even just Wright's. Or if you want to be a little cutesy, Wright Stuff (this would conjure visions of on of my favorite breakfast joints, Good Stuff on Hermosa Beach). In that vein, you could also go with honoring Frederick Olmstead, who designed both Wright Park and NYC's Central Park. Olmstead Bar and Grill? Frederick's (of Tacoma)? (it could be decorated with a variety of knickers - or not).
The other idea is to play off the outdoorsy vibe. Me, I love rivers and like Norman Maclean am haunted by waters. We are blessed in this region with really cool river names. Among the possibilities are Nisqually, Deschutes (prolly taken), Nooksack (meetcha at the Nook), Stillaguamish (Stilly's), Skagit, Skykomish, Skookumchuck (da Skook), Wynoochee (the Nooch). Humptulips anyone?
Hahaha, I think that's my favorite idea.
"Phoenix Cafe" is my second.
Just don't make it look like Farrelli's.
And the wall mural would be a fantastic idea.
A pool table would be nice if you want people to hang out for a drink in the later hours.
It would be great if breakfast was available all day. I don't get up early so I know I would truly enjoy that.
Either way, look forward to checking out the newly revamped space.
I say have some fun with it Pat, and brand the beer on the inside. We'll all know the connection, and we'll want to go to the Stadium/St. Helens location for how it is DIFFERENT from the Harmon (except for the beer part, we want that just the same).
I believ we are close to making a decision, but we have asked for some professional assistance so that we can have them also help with logo design. The one think we have decided is that we are going with a cycling theme - Old school cycling - Italian, neighborhood, gathering -the new pizza oven will be the centerpiece of the kitchen and we will provide unique artisan pizza pie, fresh non-traditional toppings, awesome pastas, salads and sandwiches; some family style dishes, all with local, fresh ingredients. Of course, locally brewed beer, a killer wine list and a full bar.
Easy "to-go" pick up which may lead to delivery.
We are working with the city, local residents and neighborhood districts to build out some additional green space out front for more outside seating and parking!! We appreciate all the comments - amazing stuff! Still pushing to open before St Paddy's Day.
Cheers!
Harmon Brew Crew
Pat Nagle
4th generation Tacoman.
My two cents on the branding: if I were associated with the Harmon I would shamelessly tout the relationship with the new digs. From the couple of years I've been a Tacoman, I gather that the Harmon has an overwhelmingly positive identity with locals, and that identity might draw customers who are unaware of who Pat is and his involvement in the new place (if only we all read Ed's Diner!)
