Good eats and drinks around Tacoma, Pierce County and South Puget Sound
Monday, November 3rd, 2008
Posted by Sue Kidd @ 10:37:51 am

Maggie Sandford, a producer with the Food network show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," called this morning asking for suggestions in the Tacoma area. A visit by the show apparently is in the works.

Boy, do I have a list for her. We have no shortage of little joints with character around South Sound. Click the "read more" button to see my list.

What's on your list? Who would you want the show to pay a visit?

[More:]

My list of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I know I'm missing some. What are they?

Classic(ish) burger drive-ins:

Frisko Freeze: 1201 Division Ave, Tacoma; 253-272-6843
Pick Quick Drive-In: 4306 Pacific Highway E, Fife; 253-922-5599
Little Holland Drive-In: 5008 Center St., Tacoma; 253-564-8661
Wally's White River Drive-In: 282 State Route 410 N.,
Buckley; 360-829-0871
Big Daddy's Drive-in: 1138 Auburn Way S, Auburn; 253-833-7255

Hot dog diners:

Hot Rod Dog: 1742 Pacific Ave., Tacoma; 253-593-6030
Red Hot: 2914 6th Ave., Tacoma; 253-779-0229
Klem's Hot Dog Diner: 1015 Auburn Way S., Auburn; 253- 334-7264

All-out diner or diner-type joints (I am seriously lacking in this category. What would you recommend?)

Poodle Dog: 1522 54th Ave. E., Tacoma; 253-922-6161

The Red Hot, Alfred's Cafe (they have a diner!), I would say Marcia's but they went Sysco on the gravy. Top of Tacoma, Knapp's...

Let's take the stuff from Auburn out ok? That's south King County and really shouldn't count.
bigjimmy77 @ 12:07 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
I know its in Olympia but Eastside Big Tom's on 4th Ave.
monkeybob @ 13:00 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
You should add Big Bubba's Burgers - The place in Allen that Gary (Sunriser and Gary's Steak Out) and his wife bought and completely did what Gary does best... Make huge food.
Crys @ 14:28 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
I dig Connie's Brickhouse personally, having eaten there several times. I enjoyed it each time. Great homemade food (yes from scratch, that kind) and budget friendly prices. On 56th and M Street I believe.
Mike_T @ 14:52 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
Kelly's in Gig Harbor for the diner category.
mrbaileyboy @ 14:59 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
Old Milwaukee on 6th ave would be the perfect place for Guy to hang out. Killer breakfast
galmila @ 15:59 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
Carrs in Lakewood would be great for the Diners.
agtoth @ 16:00 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
A & W D8442 Pacific Ave Tacoma, WA 98444-6467. Real draft rootbeer and drive-up dining in your car. Good sandwiches and fries. Rootbeer floats to die for.
tfowler @ 16:04 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
aconcernedcitizen: I am truly sorry if our gravy wasn't up to par, but I promise you it is not Sysco's. We make it every day, and it hasn't changed in 20 years, except that we put more sausage in it now.
tfowler @ 16:07 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
Oh yeah, besides my quite obvious choice for a diner...I also like Top of Tacoma and Poppyseed Cafe.
cpalmer @ 17:09 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
Don't forget Sumner! (We're in Pierce County.) And, we're the Rhubarb Pie Capital of the World! For hamburger drive-ins, there's the Main Street Dairy Freeze. Excellent milk shakes too. For all-round diners, we have a lot with the Berryland Cafe, KC's Caboose, Sully's Alder Street Cafe, Midtown Station, and Dixie's.
rightwingrick @ 17:24 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
For the best all-around gourmet food at the lowest all-around price, there is nowhere in Pierce County like the Fife City Bar and Grill on Pacific.

This is a little diner by the side of the road that looks like your old motel stand-by. But don't let the looks fool you. Inside is one of the best chefs in the Puget Sound region, whipping out gourmet meals for regular folks at regular prices. The Rueben is to die for, the slow-cooked meals are great, the salmon dish is perfection.
adrockuw @ 18:32 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
If I'm a betting man I'd guess they're going to Frisco Freeze and Pick-Quick.
scoutlady13 @ 19:09 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
I second the Fife City Bar and Grill!
tacomawife @ 19:18 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
galmila's suggestion for Carrs in Lakewood is a MUST for a diner! I can already see Guy Fieri enjoying their traditional dishes, all made from scratch- in huge portions.
torinaga @ 19:22 - Monday, November 3rd, 2008 Email
Honestly, while it is kind of a shade of it's former self, I am still happy that I can drive thru and get a Gyro at It's Greek to Me.

Go to the Red Hot and get a slaw dog with bacon and cheese!

I am partial to the 12th Street Diner. They could use some lovin' and it's looking pretty classic inside these days.
harrywhitmore @ 00:39 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
Try the Monster Burger on South Tacoma Way. You won't leave hungry.
bambie1 @ 06:41 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
How about the Poodle Dog in Fife or the Pine Cone in UP.
keithjm @ 07:18 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
i'd recommend the Country Rose in Spanaway. Breakfast is awesome (as is lunch and dinner). You can tell by all the cop cars (and you can't get near the place after church lets out on Sundays)!
@ 08:02 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008
Gerties in Madigan. Good food and a great, old time diner atmosphere complete with "sassy" waitresses

nellad73 @ 08:24 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
The Red Hot for sure! Also, PSP for breakfast....Get the Schuster Scramble!!
aConcernedCitizen @ 08:51 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
tfowler: thanks for clearing that up. Hands down my favorite breakfast in town, just during my last visit did the gravy seem well, different, but not in a good way. I'll be back for sure. Cheers.

Also: speaking of gravy, does anyone know what's happening with the breakfast brother from Wallaby's?
Olemag @ 08:55 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
I second the Poodle Dog! It's got great history. Nix on Knapps. Their rest rooms are not handicapped friendly. El Hutchos on 64th and McKinley is a certified "dive."

I'll put in a plug for Marcia's Silver Spoon. I just discovered it last year when I bought a car at Titus Will Ford. Now I head down there for breakfast every time I get an oil change (which, with the miles I drive is about once a month). I frequently get the chicken fried steak, and the gravy has always been good. You can feel your arteries hardening. The Floatation Device in Purdy also has great breakfasts, but it's more of a tavern-with-a-restaurant-license than a real diner.
ldozy123 @ 10:26 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
Gerties is a must! Lots of flavor and stories and good food also!
rayofhope22 @ 10:54 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
I would definatley say Dixie's in sumner!! Great breakfast!!!
dmjonProctor @ 12:02 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
Definitely, the Fife City Bar and Grill. The food is top-notch.
redhead522 @ 12:19 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
Best Burger is a good drive in. The spudsters are a must have! We also love as people have stated Alfred's and Marcia's. I would love PSP but they raise their prices at least once a month often times more. (i understand about the economy but really like 6-7 times in the last year) Personally think the owner could work on customer service skills also. Don't know if Mad Dog in Bonney Lake/Sumner area falls into the county lines, but they are delicious! Oh now I am starving....
chicagoan @ 12:34 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
I like that show. They are always looking for unusual menu items or preparations. Background and history is big too. There are many Diners, Drive-ins and Dives around, but my vote goes to Gerties for it's bountiful, great meals and of course, it's history.
Kjellsea @ 12:35 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
Dixie's in Sumner!!!! All my family and friends love it and I have been meaning to write to the Food Network about it anyway! Please tell Guy that it is the best and there is no chance of leaving hungry if he orders the Dad's Special!
Shekshipastr @ 12:39 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
How about spuds pizza on 72nd and Pacific. I like it there.
Shekshipastr @ 12:41 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
Dad special at dixie's is HUGE. My wife and I split it for lunch...and diner.
Bunnee @ 13:08 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
I wouldn't recommend the Poodle Dog. Lots of history, perhaps, but any place incapable of producing a good French Dip sandwich shouldn't be on the list. The last (and it will be the last)time I was there, the service was non-existent. We were finally seated by an off-duty employee who was having a cup of coffee. Carr's is a much better choice.
MaggieS @ 13:16 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008
THANK YOU, one and all! This has been so very helpful. I will try to let you all know what ends up on the show. And if you think of anything else, please keep on writing!

Thanks so much, truly,

Maggie

How about West End Bar & Grill, Philly Joe's, MSM Deli, It's Greek to Me, and Spud's Pizza Parlor. There's even Harbor Light's
Prosser @ 16:11 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
MSM Deli. Looks like a run down corner store and has the best sandwiches in town.
etfm @ 16:31 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
I second whoever said Red Hot and PSP for breakfast.
DontRainOnMyPlate @ 16:59 - Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 Email
Surely the Southern Kitchen on 6th and Sprague would perfectly qualify for this category. How many ways do they do catfish anyway? Talk about the Pork Chop breakfast too. This place has real character and quite a history as well.
mcdomaa @ 09:42 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
Second on Southern Kitchen!!!... and third... been there for breakfast (and lunch) many a time and they have always done a magnificent job.... luv them hushpuppies!!
PSP, Old Milwaukee Cafe & Marcia's for breakfast.
MSM... best sandwiches...
aConcernedCitizen @ 10:56 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
Totally spaced on Southern Kitchen.
torinaga @ 11:00 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
Word. Best Pork Chops ever.
DontRainOnMyPlate @ 11:11 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
There is also Mrs. Turner's Plantation Restaurant in Puyallup with there famous pancakes.
bratface @ 13:38 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008
Please do not recommend Frisco Freeze to the show! The food hasn't been good for years.
Cskinnner @ 16:14 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
Don't forget Tides Tavern in Gig Harbor! Fish and chips great, Taco salad yum, Pizza and grilled burgers! Have him come in by boat!

Friesenburgers 308 East 26th Back to bacics. Grate Burgers and good deep fried hot dogs. they also have grate deep fried twinkies.
ScrappyGirl @ 16:23 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
Friesenburgers on East 26th adjacent to the T-Dome is not to be missed. Try their namesake burger and deep fried hotdogs. And don't forget the deep fried twinkie for dessert!
saxygranny @ 16:29 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
Marcia's, definitely. Uncle Thurm's. Absolutely NOT Harborlights.
youngdreams81 @ 20:06 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
If you haven't tried Marcia's Silver Spoon you haven't had the best diner style breakfast in the Puget Sound! Make sure you bring someone with you to help you finish your plate! Carr's in Lakewood is like the not quite grown up version of Marcia's, they try but their not there yet, maybe someday.
tab2477 @ 21:17 - Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 Email
Kelly's Cafe and Espresso in Gig harbor has great breakfast and awesome hamburgers. It is located in downtown Gig Harbor.

I would say stop in at Friesenburgers located at: 308 E. 26th St. Great burgers and even have fried Twinkies!

Around the Corner in Orting is a great place...The Hobo Hash is excellent. They serve great home cooked meals. I recommend Around the Corner in Orting!
ORourkeclan @ 15:38 - Thursday, November 6th, 2008 Email
HEY Tacoma - My family and I go to Friesenburger at least once a week, to this great burger joint. It's the closest thing to IN/OUT burgers of California. Michael and Bob are great host(owners). My favorite burger is the friesenburger itself - you have to try it!!! Also try - their new onion burger, and of course the Deep fried Twinke for desert. They're located at - 308 East 26th, Tacoma right between the freighthouse and the Tacoma Dome.
therizno @ 09:31 - Friday, November 7th, 2008 Email
It has got to be Spud's. There is alot of history and they have there own bakery int the back where the make all the pizza crusts and bake their own bread for sandwiches.

For dives how about Quickie Too on MLK? It is Jamaican vegan and so good and kinda run down, slow service but it is sooo good!
tiggerme @ 09:21 - Sunday, November 9th, 2008 Email
I'll second Quickie Too on MLK...nummy!!!! And the right kind of owners for Guy's show!
bstever48 @ 10:13 - Sunday, November 9th, 2008 Email
How about the Lil' Park in Spanaway.
starr1983 @ 15:05 - Sunday, November 9th, 2008 Email
The "12th STREET DINER"!!! Since under new ownership, you should most definitely add it to the list!... Their HOMEMADE SOUP (that is made by one of the owners, Rachel) is "the bomb.com" They have PITA WRAPS, BURGERS, SALADS, SEASONED FRIES, POTATO SALAD & SANDWICHES! They also have an array of MILKSHAKES that make you want to come back and try a different flavor each time. Got to try the CUPCAKE or PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY milkshake.

adrockuw @ 19:58 - Sunday, November 9th, 2008 Email
My comment above was about where I figured they'd go. Where SHOULD you go? Little Holland, Tides Tavern, Katie Downs, Cloverleaf
NorthEndJustin @ 01:33 - Monday, November 10th, 2008 Email
If you've ever watched the show they don't tend to show placed that use frozen hamburger patties and pre-made food.

To me that automatically knocks places like frisko freeze of the list. While it's nostalgic and a decent burger...I don't think it would be too exciting to watch them toss some patties on the grill and add lettuce and sauce to them afterward.

That being said I'm pretty much drawing a blank right now. I'll jut blame it on it being 130am.
dbreneman @ 11:27 - Monday, November 10th, 2008 Email
http://tildebang.com
Why are people recommending the Tides? It's neither a drive-in, hot-dog place nor diner. It's a tavern, and an expensive one at that (although I'm sure their property taxes and insurance for the dock account for a lot of that).
cking9900 @ 13:03 - Monday, November 10th, 2008 Email
I'll vote for Marcia's Silver Spoon! The atmosphere is classic diner and the food is terrific! Every time we've eaten there, we've had good experiences. We love the sausage gravy. And the side of grilled ham is yummy. I've never been a hashbrown fan but I can't pass them up when I have breakfast there. It's cool too b/c the Lucky Silver tavern next door is owned by the same family. I believe Marcia's sister owns the tavern and the girls bought both places from their mother. Would make for an interesting story for TV!
SonicCruiser @ 08:59 - Tuesday, November 11th, 2008
Hello! The Burger Express in Federal Way, has the biggest, tallest and fattest burgers with a ginormous batch of fresh homemade fries. This place beats the Frisco Freeze burger by 1/2 pounds of sheer goodness! And the shakes are thicker and tastier than the Freeze too. They even have the black and white checkered floor!

Carrs~~ Forget it unless you have cleared your calender for the day!
NappyNorma @ 12:46 - Tuesday, November 11th, 2008 Email
Do all these recommendations mean that these places are worth being featured on national television? Or does this mean that you're just supporting your local rube? Not all of these places qualify as good in Pierce County fer G-d's sake.
GHObserver @ 18:57 - Tuesday, November 11th, 2008 Email
Tides Tavern is a great bar...but the food is only average.. go for the micro's and the view. Diner's,
Drive-ins and Dives focuses more on homey scratched prepared top notch foods... Southern Kitchen and Its Greek to Me come to mind. Kelly's and Judson Street in the Harbor are good, but not "Divey"; Marcia's is a good choice too. For a way cool Pizza joint Rock Pizza is worth a look.
footballscaa @ 09:44 - Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 Email
OK I know you are wanting Pierce Cty. locations, however. The finest breakfast in Washington St. is in Elma. The Rusty Tractor has two-fisted size, freshly baked biscuts they call cow patties and lumberjack sized portions. Guy would love this place. It is more than worth the trip. Scale burger isn't bad but,the west is a tough place to find the kind of diners and dives this show likes to feature. We just don't do it with the same flair as the mid-west and east coast do. I mean, the Red Hot is a fun place, but anyone can make those dogs at home. Southern Kitchen is a dive, but the food is just average. My search continues for the ultimate dive, but I'm not sure there are any in the Puget Sound area.
footballscaa @ 09:53 - Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 Email
Follow up~ The MSM deli is a great place for sandwiches, but. It's just a deli, with average soup. The Fife City B&G is totally overrated here. Dry food and a High price menu, 11.95 for fish and chips???? Gortons fish and coated fries. And too few of each. I'd be ashamed to have Guy visit. The BBQ joint in Fife is pretty good, can't remember the name tho. Send em' to Dick's.
cking9900 @ 16:58 - Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 Email
I believe the BBQ joint in Fife is called The Warthog and I remember them having rockin' brisket!

You have to try Around the Corner Cafe in Orting. It's a great place with wonderful and friendly people. The Hobo hash is amazing!
