Good eats and drinks around Tacoma, Pierce County and South Puget Sound

UPDATE 4/5: I was wrong. The 75-cent condiment charge was for the Oregon blue cheese that I'd agreed to be upsold on. I just called Higgins to check on what should have been checked previously. A regrettable error, indeed. The sirloin burger, panzanella salad and buttermilk donuts were awesome. Next time I'm in Portland, I'll apologize to the bartender with a bigger tip. Thanks to Group X Restaurants for pointing out my error.

"Would you like ketchup and mustard?"

I said yes.

A metal stand holding three glass containers arrived.

Whole-grain mustard.

Yellow mustard.

Ketchup.

Cha-ching.

Cha-ching.

Cha-ching.

75 cents.

This meal was on my dime, not company time, so I'll say it:

The ketchup tasted like condensed tomato crap.

The rest of the meal was divine.

CORRECTION 2/21: I incorrectly reported the location of this new "smoking bar." My original post stated the "smoking bar" was opening where a defunct bar and grill with a similar name resides.

UPDATE 2/21: North Point Bar & Grill is now looking for cocktail waitresses.

If you see smoke at 6210 29th St. NE in Tacoma, don't call the fire department. Call all your cancer-craving buddies.

A "smoking bar" is about to fire up at that address. Here's North Point Bar & Grill's job ad on craigslist:

Cook/Dishwasher in Smoking Bar
North Point Bar & Grill is seeking a full time and/or part time cook. The menu will be mainly bar food. Such as burgers, pizza, deep fried food. Must be 21 years or older. Must be able to work in smoke filled environment. Dishwasher also needed on part-time basis. Located in Tacoma 98422. Opening soon apply ASAP.

The state hasn't lifted its smoking ban; judging by the Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer's records, the "smoking bar" is a tribal thing.

Also, do you know that The Tacoma Club tips its cooks?

In my Breakfast A to Z report in this morning's GO section, I inadvertently referred to loco moco being served at the B&I in Lakewood. Bert's Breakfast Anytime went out of business last week. The reference was not removed before publication. Ed's Diner regrets the error.

Speaking of breakfast, I came across some good chicken-fried steak out there. Let me lose some weight before I tackle a CFS cover story. In the meantime, please weigh in on great breakfasts I haven't yet discovered.

CORRECTION: I incorrectly credited Margarita Beach Cafe's blog to Gordon Naccarato. Steve Naccarato is the blogging brother. Ed's Diner apologizes for the error.

If it seems like everybody and his dishwasher has a blog, well, it’s almost like that. South Sound restaurateur Steve Naccarato blogs under Margarita Beach Café’s banner.

A vintage photo of his brother, Pacific Grill/Beach House at Purdy/Margarita Beach Café chef/co-owner Gordon Naccarato, sporting a quintessentially 1970s mustache is among the blog bits. The post on the whereabouts of former Margarita Beach/Beach House/Pacific Grill executive chef Matt Colony is as skimpy as the bikinis on the boys in another photo that dresses up Naccarato’s blog.

A press release I received today explains Colony’s departure: he’s now executive chef at Friday Harbor House Restaurant in the San Juan Islands.

Tiaunnah Knox, who cheffed at Beach House, is in charge of Margarita Beach's kitchen.
