Washington center Juan Garcia announced last night at the team banquet that he will pass on the NFL draft and return to the Huskies next season.
The annoucement means that four of UW's five starters and five of their six most-used linemen will return next season.

since next year looks like do-or-die for the current staff, I'd say this great news re: Garcia is at least as important as any of the recent recruiting commits, if not moreso.
Ta'amu, Fogerson, and the previous 18 commits won't contribute as much during the pivotal 2008 season.

Great news! I was hoping he would be back. I think that playing together as a line for a year or more really helps these guys do their job and adjust to defensive schemes. There were some great holes for Rankin to run through against Cal so I'm sure the guys are capable. I just hope we can shore up the defense.
I agree - that's a great decision for the program, and for Garcia as well. He's a real character guy whom I would like to see succeed in whatever he does, and I think another year playing with that O-line (a bright spot in a gawdawful season) will be good for all concerned.
Is that true about Ta'amu and Fogerson? If so, it just got a slight increment easier to shell out more money for season tics next March. It's already a pretty good class (even if alarmingly thin at LB, CB and S so far). Still, if they want to keep the goose alive they better not raise ticket prices until they raise wins.

This will be a big help to the Husky running game and should help take the pressure off Locker so that he does not have to run so often. Having an effective running game will also help Jake develop as a passer. It has been a long time since the Dogs have had a winning season. I bet they have one next season.
Hey Don, one point I havent seen too many writers make, is that UW had the nations toughest schedule and we lost many of our games by a TD or less. I cant remember how many games we lost because of one botched play.
And just curious if you ahve heard any news reguarding possible DC prospects. Even this early, it is obvious Baer wont be here. Ty, Turner and the rest of the gang are walking a very fine line with what they are saying, due to recruits, for the time being.

With Garcia returning along with the other three starters, is there any idea about what is going to happen to Frisbee-White? He seemed to provide a bit of a spark late in the season in helping Rankin rack up those big games? Also, not to be pessimistic, but is there a backup center on the team? Garcia is obviously the brains of the operation and if he went down what would happen?
Ugh, I just heard a sickening stat.......
Charlie Weis has more Pac-10 wins since he took over at Notre Dame, then Ty Willingham has at UW.
That stat just made my jaw drop. I really think Ty shouldnt be here anymore. That is unacceptable beyond words.

Matt Sedillo is listed as the No. 2 center. However, if Garcia went down, it could also be that Ryan Tolar would move over from guard with White-Frisbee (or Sedillo) moving into the vacated guard spot.
That would seem to be White-Frisbee's role next season: either play his way into a starting spot or provide depth.
I know the coaches seemed impressed not only with what he did at times this season, but with his potential to get better still.

The Huskies were close in a lot of games this season, M. However, it's hard to know what to make of that because they were close in a lot of games the season before -- USC, Cal, ASU -- and couldn't turn those into wins either.
I think the one thing this week's press conference clarified is that close won't be enough next season.

It may not make you feel much better, M, but Weis and Willingham have the same number of Pac-10 wins in the past three seasons.
Weis is 6-3: three wins over Stanford, two over UCLA and one over Washington, while losing three times to USC.
Willingham is 6-20 (talking, of course, only about his time at UW) with two wins over Arizona and single wins over UCLA, Washington State, Stanford and Cal.

Look at it this way, Ty's got to be WAY ahead in WAC wins, right? Right? (Aw, hell...)

Tell me you didn't come to that conclusion just based on that stat. I'm pretty sure UW would have had a few more Pac-10 wins in '05 if Brady Quinn had come with Ty.
