Lost a little bit amid the grunting gridiron followers, coaches, players and media at the Pacific-10 Conference's football media day Thursday were a few revealing snippets from new commissioner Larry Scott.

Scott, a former Harvard athlete, left his director position at the WTA (women's tennis) last March to accept the position as the Pac-10 commissioner, replacing Tom Hansen, who retired after 26 years in power. Scott started his post July 1.

An intriguing and potentially profitable aspect of Scott's background is his business relationships in the Far East – something he will, no doubt, explore in expanding the conference's exposure and marketing.

Bottom line: Expect Pac-10 games not only to be shown in Japan, China and Korea, but occasionally be hosted there, starting with women's sports and basketball. Football is a ways away from going overseas.

A popular topic – and complaint – is the Pac-10's television agreement with Fox Sports, which runs through 2012. While Scott didn't directly say that the conference will go a different direction after that contract expires, it was a bit peculiar that at the start of the media day, it was ESPN that was asked to put together a 2008 Pac-10 highlight production.

There's nothing like ESPN anchorman Neil Everett, from the network's Los Angeles-based studio, hailing the Pac-10 as the "conference of champions" to kick off an event. Sure the folks at FSN appreciated it.
