Editor's note: Don Ruiz filled in for me at today's practice – in time for true freshman and other newcomers to be allowed by UW coach Steve Sarkisian to talk to the media. He filed a story on receiver James Johnson. Here are some interesting tidbits:

Did you know the talk of the Husky receiving corps, the 18-year-old who got 20 more snaps in the first game against No. 11 Louisiana State (which did not move up in the top-25 poll this week) – the weapon who has created more buzz in Montlake than any first-year player – has 13 brothers and sisters?

"Eight brothers, five girls, and everybody kind of went their own way," Johnson told a large contingent of media after practice.

Johnson lived in dangerous neighborhoods in Los Angeles – until his mother moved him down to San Diego to live with his oldest brother, Greg Taylor. Taylor is now Johnson's legal guardian.

And Taylor made Johnson do the little things – chores – that teenagers hate, like cleaning his room, washing dishes and mopping floors.

The man really responsible for landing Johnson is Jimmie Dougherty, who was the former offensive coordinator at the University of San Diego. He first watched Johnson in 7-on-7 drills when he was a sophomore at Valley Center High School.

And when Dougherty left the NCAA Division I-AA school to join Sarkisian at the UW, he had the inroad with Johnson necessary to make him a late addition to the 2009 recruiting class.

Other developments:

• Cornerback Marquis Persley has finally returned to being a full-practice participant.

• For the second consecutive day, redshirt freshman Greg Walker took the most snaps with the No. 1 defense at free safety.

• As expected, defensive end Darrion Jones (ankle, knee) did not practice, but was on the sideline.

• Erik Folk made all four field-goal attempts in practice, after coming off a 3-of-4 performance against LSU.
